This magnificent chandelier is crafted from shining golden ormolu (gilt-bronze), and is filled with opulent details reminiscent of the Louis XIV style.
The chandelier is comprised of twelve lights arranged in two tiers. The nozzles and drip pans sit atop foliate-capped scroll branches, which elegantly extend from the knopped and waisted central stem. At the root of each arm hangs an ormolu finial, which is engraved with circular motifs, whilst the arms themselves are ornately decorated with acanthus leaves. The foliate motifs and scrolls in particular recall the designs of the Louis XIV period.
Known for his craftsmanship and creativity, Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) presided over one of the most renowned and prolific foundries of Belle Époque Paris. Barbedienne’s atelier created sculptures, clocks and bronze mounts of the highest quality and his works were shown at numerous international exhibitions of the period, where he won multiple awards. Among these was the noteworthy Grande Médaille d'Honneur, which Barbedienne won in Paris in 1855.
The chandelier is signed ‘F. BARBEDIENNE’ on the knop.
This superb chandelier exemplifies the excellent quality pieces which Barbedienne was known for, and would be sure to add a touch of refined luxury to any interior.
