Louis XV style ormolu and Sèvres style porcelain clock set
Style of Sèvres (French, founded 1738)
£15,000
This fine three-piece clock set, crafted from finely wrought ormolu and Sèvres style porcelain, is a superb example of late 19th century French Rococo design.
This fine three-piece clock set, crafted from Sèvres style porcelain and ormolu, is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking en suite ewers.
The mantel clock features an ornate ormolu body, with a lower shaped base inset with five rectangular porcelain plaques; the upper section of the body features a rectangular clock case flanked with twin scrolled buttresses, with each scroll of each buttress inset with a shaped porcelain plaque. The circular porcelain dial is inscribed with Roman numeral hour indices within faux cartouches, all encompassed by a parcel gilt bleu celeste ground. The five porcelain plaques contained within the base, and the two within the buttresses, are similarly adorned, each painted with Rococo style floral garlands and putti, all within parcel gilt bleu celeste borders.
The ormolu body of the clock case is ornately formed, moulded with classicising detailing and garlands of fruit. The case is surmounted by a porcelain urn-form finial, with the painted central roundel containing a portrait of Marie Antoinette.
The en suite ewers are similarly formed, each featuring an ormolu base moulded with foliate detailing and a porcelain body painted with a fête galante type scene. Each ewer features a porcelain neck and a wonderfully ornate ormolu scrolled handle.
