Created in the late 18th Century, this writing desk is a beautiful piece of antique furniture, which is exquisitely decorated with floral marquetry designs.
The walnut writing desk (or bureau plat) stands on four turned and tapered legs, which feature marquetry fluting and are set on brass sabots. The body of the desk is oval and its frieze is decorated with marquetry work, depicting flower heads within guilloche motifs. The front panel can be pulled out to reveal a drawer behind. The panel features a central brass keyhole and escutcheon which is decorated with foliage swags. The sides of the desk’s body feature brass knobs which can be used to pull out leather-topped writing slides. The top of the desk is inset with a tooled leather writing panel and is edged with a pierced brass gallery.
