Description

This superb mantel clock is crafted form malachite and ormolu in the Louis XVI style—with the malachite veneer being a later addition. The clock features a malachite marble-form case set centrally with a white enamel dial. The case is flanked on either side by ormolu dolphin-shaped handles, which issue streams of ormolu water that curve and converge on the top of the case. The front of the case is finished with ribbon-tied sprays of acanthus leaves, also wrought from ormolu.

The vase-form case is supported by an ormolu socle moulded with foliate detailing, which is in turn raised on a malachite plinth finished with pierced ormolu rinceau friezes.

The clock is after a famous 1775 model by Brécourt of Paris, known as 'Vase pendule a dauphins'. The movement is marked for ‘Maxant’.
