Imbued with magnificent splendour, this very large pair of candelabra was crafted by Baccarat in the early 20th century. Made in entirety from high quality cut crystal, the pair is after a model for Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna (1824-1880).
The upper section of the candelabra is filled with 24 scrolled, cut crystal branches. The petal rims of the elegant bobeches include hanging beads and pendants. Covering the bulb fixture are crystal candle cups that support outstanding etched glass shades. Scrolling, foliate designs fill the circumference of each shade, their beauty especially coming alive when the light is switched on. Peaking from above the light fixtures is an ornate petal-edged piece terminating with a large spear-shaped crystal finial.
Each candelabra is supported by a refined central stem, composed of variously shaped parts. The upper half is slender while the lower half is filled with more bulbous glass pieces. The upper section is slender, while the lower part features more rounded forms, all unified by masterful cut decoration. Four shaped, scrolling feet support each piece. These are adorned with foliate motifs such as leaves. The two candelabra are of an identical design.
The glass bears the circular Baccarat maker’s mark.
At the 1867 Exposition Universelle, Tsar Alexander II (1845-1894) was captivated by Baccarat's exceptional craftsmanship, leading him to commission an array of pieces for his royal residences. Among these was a candelabra designed for the private apartments of his wife, Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, famously known as the 'Candélabre de la Tsarine.' The pair featured in the Mayfair Gallery collection closely mirrors the piece made for the Russian royalty.
Of a wonderful design and quality, this pair of candelabra is sure to bring a touch of imperial elegance to the appropriate space. Â
