This charming English porcelain plaque depicts a reclining woman held aloft by crowned flying swans, a remarkable composition evocative of the late Victorian period.
The rectangular porcelain plaque is painted with a scene of a maiden held aloft by swans—a composition common in European art and often deemed ‘the Maiden of the Swans’. The manner of execution is fine, with delicate brushstrokes and bright, vibrant colours employed. The plaque is held within an ornate pierced giltwood frame, the front of which is mounted with red velvet.
The plaque is signed lower left ‘W. A. Hawkins. 1884’.
