This superb three-piece set comprises a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking candelabra, all three pieces wrought from malachite and ormolu—the malachite being a later, beneficial veneer.
The mantel clock is defined by a large sculptured figural surmount. The ormolu sculpture, of a female figure reclining on a daybed, represents Euterpe, the classical Muse of music, whose emblem is the panpipe, one of which she here holds. The sculpture is superbly wrought, each feature delicately rendered. The malachite clock case below is rectangular in profile, its plinth-form body supported by a flared foot. The case is extensively mounted with ormolu borders, all wrought in the Neoclassical style. The front of the case is inset with a circular white enamel dial inscribed with Roman numeral hour marks.
The six-light candelabra are similarly decorated, each candelabrum featuring an ormolu mounted malachite plinth and a body wrought to resemble a vase. This malachite vase issues the candle branches, each scrolled and finely finished with foliate detailing.
The dial is signed ‘Raingo Fres / Paris’, while the sculpture of Euterpe is signed ‘A. Carrier. Fecit’ and marked with the number ‘2057’.
