Marble, gilt and patinated bronze clock set with putti
£28,000
With its modelled bronze cherub, putto and faun figures, this clock set serves not only as a timepiece but also as a truly beautiful work of sculpture.
The set is comprised of a mantel clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock stands on a square veined red marble plinth, which is decorated with ormolu (gilt bronze) beading and square rosettes, and set on four ormolu beaded toupie feet. An ormolu cable-fluted column base is positioned on the plinth. This is draped with ormolu flower trails and topped by a seated full-length patinated bronze cherub. The cherub holds an ormolu clock drum case on a ribbon in his raised right hand. In his left, he holds a drumstick, which is poised as though he is about to strike the case. The case contains a circular white enamel dial with black Roman and Arabic Numerals, and the retailer’s name ‘Guibal/ A Paris’. The dial is displayed behind a glass lens within an ormolu guilloche-patterned bezel.
Accompanying the clock are a pair of three-light candelabra. The candelabra stand on square ormolu-beaded, veined red marble plinths with scalloped corners. These are set on beaded ormolu toupie feet. The plinths are topped by ormolu fluted column bases, upon which stand patinated bronze full-length sculptures. One sculpture depicts a faun (half-human, half-goat), while the other shows a semi-nude putto. Each figure holds three ormolu light arms which take the form of leafy, fruiting cornucopias. The arms terminate in capitals, which are decorated with leaves and berries and topped by wide beaded sconces.
