Meissen porcelain model of a bird, German late 19th century
By Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (German, founded 1710)
£3,200
Deftly painted, this elegant porcelain model by Meissen, the finest of all German makers, effectively captures the charm and beauty of this avian subject.
Of delicate size and stature, this remarkably beautiful and charming porcelain piece is a bird model by Meissen, bearing the crossed-sword mark in underglaze blue.
Depicting a ptarmigan or a similar sort of grouse or a dove, to judge from the bright red eyes and purple-grey coat of feathers, the bird stands on a small white stump, as is typical of these decorative pieces, and turns its head round to the left towards the viewer.
The prying, timid character of this nesting bird is keenly conveyed by the skilful and choice use of colour to both bird and base and masterful casting of the porcelain, as is to be expected from Meissen. Thus, it makes a wonderful home piece and decorative work of sculpture.Â
