This exceptionally large cloisonné enamel jardinière is profusely decorated with wonderful traditional motifs, including writhing dragons and crashing waves.
This cloisonné enamel jardinière is a truly impressive piece of 20th Century Chinese design. The jardinière features a rolled and engraved rim above a shouldered body, the body narrowing gradually to a slender circular foot. The white enamel ground of the jardinière is profusely adorned with traditional Chinese motifs, including stylised crashing waves, writhing five-clawed dragons, floral sprays, and other geometrical designs, including pearls of wisdom; the palette of the cloisonné enamel decoration is traditional, too, being derived from the four wucai colours, namely cobalt blue, yellow, red, and green.
The jardinière is raised on a four-legged wooden stand, each leg ornately scrolled and carved. The piece is a truly monumental statement, and a fabulous example of traditionalism in 20th Century Chinese design.
A jardinière of the same size and style can be purchased here to make the present piece into a pair.
