The bed is crafted in the eclectic Neoclassicism of the late 19th century. The headboard, with a curved crown, is adorned with veneers that are arranged to resemble the rays of the rising sun, while the end board is decorated with elaborate marquetry: the centre of the end board features an abstracted vase topped with feathers and draped with a foliate garland, all set within a cartouche.
The bed is also adorned with superb ormolu mounts: the foliate sabots that terminate in scrolled feet, for instance, and the ornate cartouche that adorns the bottom of the end board and the elaborate mount that crowns the headboard.
The bed was retailed by the Parisian furnishers Au Gros Chêne, as demonstrated by the brass plate affixed to the bed.
