This Neoclassical style clock is crafted in lustrous ormolu and set with hand-painted Sevres style porcelain plaques.
The clock case is shaped into an elegant, arched form and surmounted by sheaths of wheat and a laurel wreath. Beneath these autumnal motifs is set the circular, porcelain clock face, which is painted with Roman numerals in gold on a white ground. Within the circular band of numerals, the centre of the clock dial is delicately painted with a charming courtship scene which is signed by the retailer 'HOWELL JAMES & CIE / PARIS'. The entire dial, including the numerals, is bordered with a striking turquoise ground and bands of parcel gilt detailing. Wrapped around the edge of the clock dial are intricate, foliate, ormolu decorations, and beneath the dial are three ormolu frame-like designs which are set with porcelain plaques, featuring similarly light-hearted decorations to compliment the painting on the clock dial. The clock case is flanked by ribboned floral ormolu mounts to either side, which terminate in finely cast arrangements of fruit and flowers. The clock sits on a shallow oval base, which is adorned with a frieze, decorated alternately with porcelain plaques and ormolu mounts. The base is set on two toupie feet and four block feet.
To add to the importance of its display, the clock can be set upon a separate, rectangular, giltwood plinth, which features a top of red velvet and scrolling foliate detailing around the curved edges.
