This fine Austrian genre painting by Rudolf Geyling depicts the interior of a classroom. The scene is busy: young girls, in the evident absence of their teacher, enjoy moments of freedom, and engage in a host of playful activities. One girl plays a T-square as if it were a violin; another pair dances; one wipes from a blackboard an unflattering portrait of their teacher; another picks up cards; one young girl, ears cupped with her hands, attempts to study amidst the chaos. The moment of fun is about to end, though: at the door, a girl raises her hands in shock, alerting her classmates to the return of their teacher.
The painterly manner is exceptionally fine, with the many figures given a wide range of expressions and postures, and the walls of the classroom adorned with a variety of school props. The colour palette is bright and vibrant, with raking light from an unseen window giving each figure a sculptural quality.
The painting, contained within a carved giltwood frame, is signed ‘R. Geyling’ lower left.
