‘Omaggio in Black’ large stoneware vase by Amy Hughes

By Hughes, Amy (English, active 21st century)

£4,600

This contemporary campagna vase by Amy Hughes forms part of a series of three ceramic works inspired by the Italian artist Piranesi.

Description

This unusual stoneware vase is part of a series entitled ‘Omaggio’, by the contemporary artist Amy Hughes. Each of the three ceramic pieces combines traditional classicised vase form, with playful decorative twists inspired by the Italian artist and architect Piranesi (1720-1788). Hughes takes inspiration from the etchings that Piranesi is famous for, which explore space and design through an imaginative, playful lens.

Of campagna form, the hand-built vase features press-moulded details, in the form of overlapping fluted slats of various sizes. Further fluting can be seen on the flared socle, and on the outside of the lip. The entire piece is unglazed, allowing the viewer to appreciate the natural texture of the stoneware. Colour contrasts are provided by the specks of white against the deep black material.

From West Yorkshire, Hughes graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2010, and her innovative ceramic pieces have since been exhibited at several prestigious institutions and fairs. In 2015, she was chosen for the first ‘Ceramics and Industry’ artists’ residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Whether standing alone or with its companion pieces, this unusual vase would be an elegant addition to any interior. View the other vases in the series here and here.
