Ormolu, champlevé enamel, onyx and marble longcase clock
£45,000
Crafted from a variety of beautiful materials, this longcase clock is a truly wonderful, colourful piece of decorative art, perfect for a well-furnished home.
This longcase clock is crafted from marble and onyx, and decorated with champlevé enamel and ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts. The clock stands on a square red marble base, which is set on four slim ormolu feet. The upper edge of the base is mounted with a guiolloche ormolu band, with a champlevé enamel plaque on its centre front.
The clock’s base is topped a tall green onyx block and two free-standing columns, with an ormolu pendulum hanging between them. This pendulum terminates in a classical mask sun-burst motif. The two columns feature ormolu bases, colourful champlevé enamel shafts with ormolu gadrooned bands around their centres, and ormolu acanthus leaf capitals with muquarnas tops. The shafts are decorated with white, pink, green, royal blue and navy enamels, arranged in Islamic-inspired geometric and foliate motifs. An ormolu egg-and-dart cornice and shaped champlevé enamel apron connect the two column capitals.
Topping the onyx block and columns is a cuboid green onyx case. This is mounted on its front with a circular clock dial which features a central floral champlevé enamel design, encircled by black Arabic Numerals. The dial is set within an ormolu egg-and-dart and enamel bezel. The corners of the onyx case are lined with beaded ormolu bands and the sides are set with circular ormolu barometers, with floral champlevé enamel centres. The clock face is surmounted by a slim projecting red marble top, which is fringed with champlevé enamel drapery forms with ormolu drop-finials.
