This fine Empire style chandelier is crafted from ormolu, metal, and cut glass. The chandelier is of the traditional ‘tent and bag’ or ‘tent and basket’ form, with a lower domed or basket body and an upper canopy, the shape of the basket and the canopy articulated by cascading chains of faceted glass droplets.
The top of the chandelier is defined by a corona of anthemia and rosettes from which springs chains of faceted glass droplets. The bottom of the canopy is defined by the primary ormolu belt—known as the meridian—from which falls the domed belly of the chandelier, articulated by yet more chains of glass drops.
Hidden behind the ribbons of glass beads are five lights arranged over two tiers. When illuminated, the effect of the chandelier is spectacular, with the issued light passing through the countless facets of the cut glass droplets.
