Ormolu and mahogany buffet cabinet, attributed to Mercier Frères
Attributed to Mercier Frères (French, est. 1828)
£45,000
This superb long buffet cabinet is attributed to the Mercier Frères, one of the leading producers of luxury furniture active in Paris during the 19th Century.
The mahogany cabinet features a fleur de pêcher marble top, set above a cabinet of three bays, with each bay featuring a frieze drawer above and a large cupboard below. The surfaces of the cupboard doors are finished with geometrical marquetry bounded within ebonised wood borders, while the frieze drawers feature ebonised wood borders finished with inlaid brass beading. The cabinet is profusely adorned with ormolu mounts, all wrought in the Neoclassical style: the doors are cornered with scrolled and pierced ormolu brackets, while the drawers are set with ormolu handles. The sides of the cabinet are conformingly finished with marquetry, and the cabinet is raised on toupie feet.
