Description

Mounted with ormolu and crafted from celadon porcelain, whereby the vase has been glazed with this soothing jade green-grey colour, this beautiful piece is noteworthy in particular for the pâte-sur-pâte, or paste-on-paste, figurative elements that adorn either side.

With simple yet effective gilt-bronze ornamental elements on either side, with handles surmounted by pinecone finials, the porcelain is decorated with a pâte-sur-pâte figure of a Classical maiden or goddess playing a lyre, probably Artemis, and a stag grazing in an ethereal wilderness to the reverse. These images, in beautiful Neoclassical style, complement both the celadon glaze and the overarching deocorative style to great effect, making this piece a particularly pleasing and desirable lighting instalment: guaranteed to enliven the interior in which it is placed.
