This large and impressive ormolu mounted wooden harp is by Pleyel, Wolff, Lyon & Cie., one of the 19th Century’s most important producers of musical instruments.
This harp is by the preeminent maker Pleyel, Wolff, Lyon & Cie. The wooden base of the harp is raised by ormolu (gilt bronze) paw feet, while the edges of the base are parcel gilt. From the base rises a wooden column, the column’s base and capital parcel gilt and affixed with figurative ormolu mounts. The wooden neck and soundbox are finished with ormolu and, while the neck is inscribed ‘Pleyel Wolff Lyon & Cie (Paris) / Harpe syste. Gve. Lyon (Breveté)’ and numbered ‘592’.
