Description

Representing the ingenuity and brilliance of Linke, this wonderful antique side table is most impressive for the way it folds open to reveal a sumptuously lined red-velvet and mirrored interior.

By Francois Linke (French, 1855-1946), the leading ébéniste (cabinet maker) of the Parisian Belle Époque, with index number 644, it is executed in the Louis XV style, with both Rococo and Transitional stylistic influences. It features a curvaceously shaped outline, with a marble inlay top with a mounted edge. This sits above quarter-veneered and cube inlaid sides, in beautiful parquetry patterns.

The highlight of this exceptional piece, the exact function of which is left to the owner, is the way it folds open. It features two opposing hinged falls, which are inset with mirror-glass panelled undersides. These enclose a rich, red-velvet lined conforming interior. The table is mounted upon keeled cabriole legs.

The lockplates are signed 'CT LINKE SERRURERIE PARIS,' while the reverse of the mounts are stamped 'LF.' Dated to c.1900, it forms a beautiful, wonderfully sophisticated antique piece, guaranteed to make a marked impact on the interior in which it is placed, far beyond its small, refined, delicate size and structure.
