This magnificent ormolu mounted writing desk is by Edmond Poteau, one of the leading ébénistes working in Paris during the latter 19th Century.

Description

The desk features a large, wide top, set with tooled leather and encompassed by an embossed ormolu border. The shaped apron of the desk is finished with a wonderful warm veneer, while the fronts of the three inset drawers are finished with diamond-form parquetry. Each drawer is centred with an ormolu rocaille-form escutcheon and framed with an ormolu mount. The cabriole legs terminate in paw-form ormolu sabots, while the top of each leg is mounted with a superbly crafted ormolu espagnolette.

The lock plate of the central drawer is signed 'E. POTEAU Rue de Turenne, 59. PARIS’.
