The mirror is crafted from porcelain and ormolu, or gilt bronze, in the distinctive Rococo style prevalent during the reign of Louis XV. The porcelain is by Hautin Boulenger & Cie, Choisy-Le-Roi, a leading producer of porcelain in the Sèvres style during the 19th Century.
The mirror features an ormolu frame centred with an oval bevelled mirror, surrounded by four triangular corner cartouches separated by circular medallions. Each cartouche is inset with a porcelain plaque decorated in the Sèvres manner, with a bleu celeste ground and Rococo style portrayals of female figures and cherubim, all executed in subdued pastel shades.
The ormolu frame is superbly wrought and finished, the foliate detailing throughout finely cast and chased. Most impressive are the encrusted ormolu garlands that drape the shoulders and overhang he medallion crown that crests the frame.
The circular right side porcelain panel is impressed to the reverse with ‘H.B. / Choisy’.
