Description

Yellow, sage green and purple, this fine Turkish kaftan was made in the nineteenth century in the Ottoman period, and is embroidered with metal threads along its striped exteriors. It features block metal stripes and can be buttoned all the way down.

In the early 19th Century, caftans such as this were worn over a robe. Generally they were open in form, and sometimes had sleeves although they did not usually have a collar. Other similar examples can be found in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul.
