Description

This painted porcelain plaque by KPM depicts Mary Magdalene. Mary is portrayed in her typical pose (see Guido Reni's portrait currently in the National Gallery in London, for instance), her head thrown back and eyes cast towards heaven in solemn contemplation. The manner of the painting is decidedly baroque, with Mary’s features illuminated by a single raking light source, rendering her in chiaroscuro. The portrait is beautifully painted, with delicate, precise brushstrokes employing a golden, warm palette.

The plaque is contained by an ornate giltwood frame. The reverse of the plaque is marked with an inventory number as well as the mark for KPM.
