Crafted and executed in the French Empire style, these striking lamp-bases, most likely American, are made of silvered-bronze and cut glass. Their ribbed ovoid bodies, effectively shaped like Classical amphorae, have flared necks, below collars which have engraved guilloche borders. On each side the lamps are mounted with high-scrolling handles, which bear female mask heads in small circular roundels on either face. Large male satyr-head masks furnish the sides of each piece in silvered bronze. The glass bodies are then mounted on circular socles, which are set upon acanthus-cast square bases.Â
Combining a refined modernity with the style and grandeur of the French Empire period, these pieces make for a classy, sleek, and striking addition to a modern interior. The lamps are also fitted for electricity, height 43.5cm (excluding light fittings).
