Description

This exquisite pair of cushion-shaped caskets is crafted from vibrant blue opaline glass, a highly desirable material in 19th and early 20th century French design. The striking blue hue is achieved by incorporating metal oxides into the glassmaking process, creating the semi-opaque, richly coloured effect that was particularly sought after during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III (1808-1873).

Reflecting the ornate opulence of the Second French Empire, these decorative boxes are adorned with intricate ormolu embellishments, a hallmark of the period’s grand aesthetic. Inspired by Empress Eugénie’s admiration for the court of Marie Antoinette, the era saw a resurgence of Rococo motifs, evident here in the floral-inspired ormolu mounts. These gilded accents form a protective edge, sturdy hinge, decorative base, and an elegant frame for the cameos, enhancing the caskets’ luxurious appeal.

Beautifully representative of 19th-century French craftsmanship, these highly decorative opaline glass caskets would make a sophisticated addition to any fine antique collection or refined interior space.
