Crafted in the early 20th century, this striking pair of seats pays homage to the captivating Sancai decorative style, closely associated with the Tang dynasty (618–907). Sancai, meaning ‘three colours’ refers to a distinctive form of Chinese pottery characterised by a rich palette of amber, green, and cream - beautifully exemplified in this superb pair from Mayfair Gallery’s collection. Occasionally, these vibrant wares are also referred to as ‘egg and spinach’ pottery due to their distinctive colouration.
The seats are shaped in a rectangular baluster form, with the upper body glazed in a signature amber hue. The earthenware is intricately pierced in multiple areas, including the frieze beneath the seat and the decorative side panels, adding depth and visual intrigue to the design.
Each seat features three finely moulded and openwork designs. One depicts a cream-coloured elephant, its trunk raised for good luck, walking across a rocky landscape beneath two palm trees with gracefully drooping green leaves. Another portrays a carp swimming through rolling waves, set against a backdrop of rocks and trees. The smaller twin panels are adorned with floral trees, possibly cherry blossoms, accompanied by sculpted chimera heads above.
Resting on deep green bases, these exceptional earthenware seats are not only visually striking but also versatile. Whether placed indoors or outdoors, they bring an elegant touch to any setting.
