The pair of vases are each of blown glass, and take a stylized broad amphora shape. The narrow rims of each of the vases are decorated with a frieze of foliate motifs on a black ground. The bodies of the vases are painted with Chinese figures, butterflies, flowers and leaves on a white ground. These vases were crafted in the 18th century in the popular Chinoiserie style in Italy, and as such they blend elegant European design with novel and fascinating far Eastern motifs and themes.
The Chinoiserie movement came later to Italy than other European countries, however it flourished in the 18th century and had a lasting cultural and artistic impact, particularly upon the Rococo style. Works from this period, with this intriguing mix of cultures, make for enviable pieces for the curious collector and for the those with an eye for vibrant interior design.
