This fine pair of Limoges enamel plaques depicts portraits of two young men, each one painted in an expressive manner and a historicising Renaissance style.
Each plaque in this pair portrays a portrait of a young man shown bust length and in three-quarter profile. The men are painted in a distinctly Renaissance style: the manner of dress, and particularly the laurel wreath that crowns each man's head, recalls 16th Century portraiture. The portraits are painted in an expressive, painterly manner, with fluid brushstrokes employed to paint the clothes and backgrounds, but fine, precise strokes used to render the subtleties of each face.
The reverse of each plaque is inscribed with the name of the sitter as well as some biographical information. Each plaque is contained within a wonderfully ornate Neoclassical style carved giltwood frame.
