Description

This pair of oil paintings, both housed in matching gilt frames, gives a glimpse into life in Spain’s Alcázar palace, and is the work of Spanish artist Juan Montenegro. Very little biographical information is available on his life, but his body of work comprises of beautifully detailed depictions of Spain’s Moorish palaces, including the Alcázar of Seville.

The frame of each painting indicates where in the palace each picture is depicting. The first shows the Patio de las Doncellas, wherein a group of young boys in traditional Moorish clothing gather on a rug to inspect a plant. The other painting, labelled the Patio de las Munecas, depicts the shady courtyard with its central water feature and surrounding plants. By including figures and furnishings in his pictures, Montenegro has created a window into a bygone age in a palace brought to life through his use of depth and shadow.

Signed and dated ‘J. Montenegro/ Sevilla – 1886’ on both canvases.

A wonderfully detailed pair, these two paintings would make a fantastic addition to any interior space, and a fine addition to an orientalist art collection.
