Description

Crafted in late 19th century France, this pair of bird figures is the work of Jules Moigniez (1835–1894), a renowned French sculptor. Moigniez made his debut at the 1855 Paris Salon and went on to exhibit there numerous times. He specialised in animal sculptures, gaining particular popularity in England and Scotland.

This pair features two birds, possibly a ruff and a curlew, standing atop naturalistic bases. The ruff is depicted with ruffled feathers, appearing poised for take-off, while the curlew is shown grasping a small fish in its long, slender beak—a moment of triumph. Its half-opened wings suggest it is about to fly off with its catch.

The birds are positioned on rocky bases adorned with foliage. The curlew’s setting includes a fence, reinforcing the impression that it is perched on the banks of a river or lake in pursuit of food. The patinated bronze is exquisitely cast, with the artist capturing intricate details, from the delicate textures of the feathers to the rugged surface of the base.

Both sculptures are signed ‘J. Moigniez’ on the base.

This pair would make a particularly desirable addition to the collection of any enthusiast of animalier sculpture.
