The candelabra in this pair are crafted from malachite and gilt and patinated bronze in the Charles X style—the malachite veneer being a later, beneficial addition. Though the pieces date to the period of Charles X (that is, the 1820s), the candelabra were produced in Austria, making them a highly unusual example of early nineteenth century decorative art.
Each candelabrum features a stepped triangular malachite plinth, which supports a paw-footed tripod vase-like element wrought from ormolu and moulded with rich foliate detailing. This ormolu base supports the patinated bronze figurative stem of the candelabrum—one of a full-length male figure, one of a full-length female. The figurative stem of each, naturalistically rendered, supports the candelabrum head, which is modelled from ormolu and issues six lights.
