This fine pair of fauteuils, or armchairs, is a superb example of the Empire style. Each chair, crafted from ormolu mounted mahogany, demonstrates the taste for clean, rectilinear lines and restrained use of ornamentation for which the Empire style is known. The mahogany frame of each chair is comprised of two straight square-profile front legs, two curved back legs rising into a curved backrest, and two cylindrical armrests. The ormolu mounts are decidedly Empire in style, especially the busts and scallop shells to the front of the armrests and the other classicising mounts throughout. The front two feet terminate in ormolu paw sabots.
The chairs are unupholstered, and one chair is missing the cushioning of the backrest.
A pair of matching side chairs is available for purchase here.
