Description

Designed with the Neoclassical style in mind, this exquisite pair of vases captivates with its elegant use of porphyry.

The turned, gadrooned bodies draw the observer’s eye towards the flaring necks, which are topped with lavish ormolu covers. Each cover features an acanthus-leaf edge, adorned with ormolu floral wreaths, and is surmounted by a prominent pinecone finial. Twin scrolling handles, extending outward from the porphyry necks, are intricately designed to resemble acanthus leaves, enhancing the nature-inspired aesthetic of these antiques.

Between the stepped porphyry foot and the main body are additional ormolu mounts in the shape of acanthus leaves, complemented by a more understated band. The circular ormolu plinths rest on four geometric feet, above which large ormolu ribbons are adorned with hanging drapery, adding to the grandeur of the design.

Porphyry, highly prized in decorative arts, is renowned for its unique appearance and exceptional durability. In Imperial Rome, it was used for monumental structures, and in later centuries, it became a sought-after material for decorative wares such as vases. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, porphyry symbolises majesty and prestige, making this pair of vases particularly desirable.
