This exceptional pair of late 19th century chandeliers, crafted by the renowned French glassmaker Baccarat, showcases the striking interplay of clear, coloured, and gilt glass. Their richly layered design exemplifies the sophistication and technical mastery for which Baccarat is celebrated.
At the centre of each chandelier, the main column is composed of stacked, rounded glass segments. White overlay glass, intricately cut with floral motifs and gilded along the edges, reveals vivid red and green layers beneath, a decorative theme echoed throughout the design.
Crowning each chandelier is an ornate finial adorned with gilded white and green overlay glass flowers. Below, cascading strands of glass beads and droplets capture and scatter light with dazzling effect. From a wide central dish, gracefully scrolled and twisted glass arms extend to form the upper tier, each arm ending with radiant pendants that lend further brilliance to the structure.
The lower tier is equally lavish. Each curving arm supports a green and white overlay bobeche, trimmed with glittering drops. Above them, deep red, shaped candle cups, finished with delicate gilding, hold candle-style bulbs.Â
The chandeliers culminate in a dramatic flourish of intricate overlay glasswork, delicate suspended prisms, and a prominent tulip-shaped finial in rich red glass, ensuring the piece is as captivating from below as it is from above.
During the 19th century, Baccarat capitalised on the growing demand for European glass in Asia. The firm produced several spectacular chandeliers for elite clients in the region, including Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior (1835–1886). The design, palette, and opulent style of this pair strongly suggest they were created with the Indian market in mind.
A superb representation of Baccarat’s artistry and global influence, this magnificent pair of chandeliers makes a bold and elegant statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
