Made by Wilhelm Schiller & Sons, a Bohemian firm founded in 1829, these superb pieces are a pair of large majolica ewers, richly coloured and decorated, and displaying superb animal sculptural elements.
The spouts of the ewers are in the form of upturned shells, which are mounted with masks, that issue forth eagle head and serpent bodies handles. The ewers are further applied with a variety of creatures included hippocampi, sea or water horses, and mermaids which emerge out of the top of the ewers in the form of the ocean. The large body sections of the ewers are decorated and adorned with floral and foliate motifs. It is marked 'WS&S,' and numbered '78' for the model.
