Pair of large Chinese cloisonné enamel vases with wooden bases

These stunning cloisonné enamelled vases are of an impressive size, and showcase the superb decorative wares emerging from China in the 20^th century. The vases are identical in form, and the designs are mirrored.

Of baluster form, with flared feet and necks, the main bodies are large and ovoid. The foot features a gilded rim. The entirety of each vase is decorated with extensive cloisonné enamelling, a complex technique whereby metal partitions (‘cloisons’) on the object’s surface are filled in with vitreous enamel. The cloisons then come together to create beautiful designs, with floral and animal imagery predominant in Chinese works from this period.

The front of each vase is decorated with a sumptuous flower basket, overflowing with colourful blossoms. Blue ribbons are tied in crinkled bows on the upper handles, and charming butterflies can be seen flying in the upper corners. The reverse of each vase is designed in a similar manner, with lavish floral baskets. Additional ribboned bouquets and butterflies adorn each of the sides. The foliate motifs sit atop the blue ground, itself comprising hundreds of miniature cloisonné enamel flowers. Similar designs can be seen on the main section of the neck.

The neck and feet are adorned with bands in a more stylised manner. Scrolling and geometric forms are interspersed with pairs of abstract dragons, utilising purple and burgundy shades that contrast with the predominant blues. The flared section of the neck features a light blue encircling band, decorated with foliate and insectile motifs and bordered by lines of bamboo.

Each vase stands on a stepped circular wooden base, carved with an openwork foliate design and set on shaped feet.
