Exceptionally grand, with a remarkable sense of clarity and presence, these fine pieces are a pair of large Neoclassical pedestals, made in France.
The pedestals are made from a particularly pleasing, unusual choice of materials: ormolu, marble and glass. The base is cast in gilt bronze, with a canted acanthus frieze and a square marble inset. Above this is a circular reed band, from which stem the main body of the pedestals in glass.
A gilt band frames the centre, and the top is cast as a Corinthian column capital in gilt bronze. A final green marble square surmounts the pedestal, giving the pieces a wonderfully smooth, clear precise surface on which to mount a decorative object of choice.
