This exceptional pair of lion sculptures demonstrates the best of nineteenth century Italian craftsmanship. The sculptures depict male lions, one seated pointing towards the right, the other seated in the opposite direction, both turning their heads to meet the viewer face on. The lions are naturalistically carved from grey-white marble: the artist has deftly rendered the taut musculature of their bodies, the fine texture of their skins and manes, and the animated expression of their faces. Each lion is set atop an integral shaped rectangular marble base.
