Depicting 'an Arabic man on the move,' and a 'Tunisian water-carrier', these excellent, and very large, patinated bronze sculptures were designed by the French Orientalist artists Emile Pinedo, and Marcel Debut respectively.
One of the figures 'Arabe en Marche,' by Pinedo, depicts a beared man with a turban, carrying a walking cane across his back, strolling confidently forward, his eyes cast up to the left, with a knife tucked into the sash at his waist. The other, titled 'Porteur d'Eau Tunisien,' depicts a younger, clean-shaven man, wearing a cap, carrying a pair of water-urns, one on either side.
Excellent figurative sculptures, executed with a fine eye for naturalism and detail, they are cast in warm, richly patinated bronze. The first is signed 'Pinedo', the second 'Debut', and both are stamped 'Pinedo / Bronzes / Paris,' for the foundry. They also each bear title plaques, the former is inscribed 'Exp'n des Beaux-Arts, Paris,' the latter, 'Par Debut, 1' Prix de Rome.'
