Description

This impressive pair of candelabra is crafted from ormolu, or gilt bronze, in the Louis XVI style.

Each candelabrum features a tapered plinth-form base, the surfaces of which are profusely adorned with a variety of motifs, including Greek key pattern friezes, floral garlands, ram’s head masks, and griffons—each motif drawn from the canon of the classical past. From the base of each springs an elaborate shaft—the shaft adorned with further classicising motifs and terminating in a central candle holder. From the shaft springs four curved branches, each branch richly detailed with applied acanthus leaves and other foliate motifs.

Each candelabrum is signed ‘Susse Fes’, for Susse Frères, an important foundry established in 1839 and celebrated for its exceptional cast bronze products.
