Made in the nineteenth century, these Louis XVI style gilt-bronze urns are lavish and indulgent in their vast use of sumptuous gilt decorative elements. From the bases to the lids, they are lined with Bacchic cherbus and winged putti; the decoration features designs heavily in debt to the work of Clodion, the quintessential Rococo, and often Neoclassical, French sculptor.Â
They are each modelled in relief, with revelling Bacchic cherubs on their faces, playfully prancing with fawns amidst vines, and the lids are surmounted by winged putti, each of which holds a lavish cornucopia in each hand. In turn, the urns are mounted upon verde antico marble bases. One of the pieces is stamped 'AD' on the interior.
