By Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (German, founded 1710)
These superb Rococo style wall lights feature beautifully formed encrusted porcelain flowers, the delicacy of which epitomises the very best of Meissen craftsmanship.
This charming pair of Meissen wall lights is crafted with all the exquisite detail and grace characteristic of the Rococo period. Delicately hand-painted with gilt accents, each fixture is adorned with elaborate, classic Rococo decoration, including a wide variety of lifelike porcelain foliage, subtly modelled and painted with pastel shades of green, red, and pink.
Each wall light is roughly diamond shaped in form. A red drape defines the central panel of each backplate, with the crown, each side, and the bottom of each being laden with encrusted foliate forms. Two figures sit in front of the red drape of each light: in one, a male sits with a cherub, while in the other a female does the same. In their nudity and ideal beauty, the figures are distinctly classical. Each light supports two scrolled branches—the branches, like the body of the lights, with encrusted porcelain flowers. Each branch terminates in a foliate drip pan and a candle holder.
One light is marked with underglaze blue crossed swords to the reverse.
