Pair of Neoclassical style ormolu mounted malachite candelabra
£55,000
This impressive pair of candelabra, wrought from beautiful malachite and glistening ormolu, demonstrates the very best of the French Neoclassical style.
This pair of large candelabra is crafted from malachite and ormolu, or gilt bronze, in the Neoclassical style.
Each candelabrum features an urn-form malachite body, the rounded belly of which is supported by three ormolu legs above a trefoil base. Each curved leg terminates in a hoof foot and culminates in a faun-form grotesque mask. From the underside of the malachite body hangs a pinecone ormolu drop finial.
The waisted neck of each malachite body supports a fragment of an ormolu fluted column, the lower section of which is wrapped in a laurel wreath, while the upper portion supports the springing point of the candelabrum’s branches. Each candelabrum features thirteen light branches: one central branch and twelve flared branches arranged in a single tier about it. Each of the branches is ornately formed, the curved shape of which is adorned with superb scrolled foliate motifs. Each branch culminates in a single candleholder above a drip pan.
This pair of candelabra can be paired with a conforming pair of pedestals found here.
