Description

Each vase in this pair features an enamel body in a traditional ‘garlic-head’ form. The vases sit on wooden four-leg stands with scrolled feet. Each vase is of tripartite form, with a pinched stem, an ovoid body, and a flaring neck. Each vase includes four ormolu (gilt bronze) medallions wrought into reticulated cloud scrolls, as well as two ormolu elephant head mounts on the neck. Within each vase, glimpsed through the reticulated medallions, is nestled another, smaller vase, similarly decorated. The body of each vase features a rich blue enamel ground onto which cloisonné enamel motifs, encompassed by gold enamel wire, are fashioned. These motifs, executed in striking shades of green, yellow, red, and pink, take the form of lotus scrolls and lotus flowers, ruyi heads, and various other traditional decorative forms.
