Description

The girandoles are identically designed in a refined Rococo style. The two items feature oval-shaped mirror backplates, which are contained within strapwork gilt metal frames, their tops decorated with silvered metal foliage curled into heart shapes. Each mirror is fitted with two three-light silvered metal candelabra, which spring from gilt metal cartouches, decorated with gilt and silvered metal scrolling foliage. The candelabra feature gilt and silvered metal foliate arms, which curl upwards to terminate in urn-shaped capitals and candle tubes.

Girandoles are designed so that the light produced by the candelabra is reflected off their mirrored backs. This way, they can be used to illuminate an entire room. They were especially popular in the 18th Century in America, France and England, when they were used to decorate the walls of elite homes.
