Description

Each ormolu (gilt bronze) candelabrum in this pair is beautifully formed around the motif of the cherub: cherubim perform as atlantid-type elements, serving to support the structures of the candelabra. Cherubim also feature in the relief panels that decorate each candelabrum’s base. The pair of candelabra is profusely gilt, which further emphasises the angelism of the overarching scheme of cherubic motifs.

Each candelabrum stands on an ornately shaped scroll-work ormolu base that is decked with ormolu mounts, such as draped garlands and flared acanthus leaves. The front of each candelabrum's base features a relief panel, wrought from ormolu, which depicts two cherubim lounging in a landscape setting. From the top of each base spring two cherubim: one cherub serves as the candelabrum’s stem, supporting the weight of the entire structure, while the other cherub kneels at the first's side, his grasp pulling at the lose robe worn by the standing cherub. The cherub-form stem of each candelabrum is surmounted by a foliate mount, from which springs a three-tiered series of ten branches, each of scrolling foliate form, and each culminating in an individual candle holder.
