Pair of Old Master paintings by Johannes Jakob Hartmann
By Hartmann, Johannes Jakob (Bohemian, 1680-1730)
£120,000
These magnificent Old Master paintings are by Johannes Jakob Hartmann, the 18th Century landscape painter who was affectionately known as 'the Bohemian Bruegel'.
These highly detailed landscape paintings are the work of the celebrated early 18th Century Bohemian artist Johannes Jakob Hartmann. The first painting depicts the Sermon of St John the Baptist, with the second showing the Miraculous Healing.
Both paintings are set in vivid mountainous and bushy landscapes, inspired by Flemish Renaissance paintings. The main scene in each painting is enhanced with the dramatic use of light. On the one hand St John is depicted standing by himself on the mount, wearing a red tunic and holding his reed cross. On the other, Christ is shown with a well-dressed man in Eastern attire, the nobleman's son he cured.
Hartmann's paintings can be found in national collections including the Belvedere, Vienna (Museum inventory number 4099).
