By Salmson, Jean Jules (French, 1823-1902)
These two antique bronze figures epitomise Salmson's naturalistic, Orientalist style; the pair are considered to be the artist's best known models.
The models depict 'La Porteuse' (the water carrier) and 'Le Guerrier Arabe' (the Arab warrior). The female figure is shown clad in a robe tied with rope and a long flowing headdress, while the male figure is also shown with a flowing headdress, and is depicted holding his sash to his waist and exposing the handles of a sabre and a pistol. Each sculpture is standing on circular grassy naturalistic bases signed 'SALMSON'. The female figure was modelled in 1880 and the male figure in 1875.
