This pair of superb antique pedestals or low tables, crafted in Neoclassical style, feature the grand combination of ormolu (gilt-bronze) and malachite, a favourite of Tsarist Russian and Empire-period France.
Drawing upon earlier royal French styles of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, they feature square tapering legs above Corinthian column capital mounted feet. A joiner links the tables below with four ormolu stretchers around a pierced bowl in the centre, and strict, rectangular faces with simple yet effective applied leaf friezes that sit beneath a square, cleanly veneered malachite top, with rosettes placed in the corners of each face.
Refined and dignified stylistically, with superbly sourced precious materials, particularly the beautiful pale malachite, they bring a regal grandeur to a contemporary setting. Magnificent pieces for an entrance hall or to mount sculpture or other precious objects, they are also exquisite works in their own right, and will make a wonderful antique addition to the right interior space.
